There are many ways the Northern Star will increase your safety. There are probably ways that firefighters will utilize the Northern Star that we have not even thought of yet. At a minimum the Northern Star will have two primary functions: quick and efficient exiting of the structure – and – increased situational awareness allowing faster navigation within the structure.

When you enter an unfamiliar structure with limited visibility, we identify the structure using the designation system of A, B, C and D. However, once inside a low visibility environment, a firefighter quickly loses their orientation making the alphabetical designation useless. How can I find my secondary egress on the Bravo side if I don’t know which direction I need to travel to find the Bravo side? By taking a quick second before entering a structure, a firefighter can identify that they are entering the alpha/WEST side of the structure. Now, when you need to find the Bravo side for secondary egress, you know you’ll have to travel North to find your exit.

Similarly, when your IC gives you the order to proceed to the Charlie side to extinguish a hot spot, rather than guessing which way the Charlie side is, through the use of the Northern Star, you’ll know confidentially that you need to travel east. It’s a simple concept but one that is not available in the fire service; that is until today. The Northern Star changes that at an affordable cost.

Yes. Northern Star Fire LLC has multiple domestic and international patents filed.

Absolutely. We are dropping it, kicking it, smashing it, cooking it, freezing it, and dunking it before putting it in your hands. However, just to be thorough, we will be working with an independent testing agency to put it through its paces. A water-tight gasket seals the unit making it waterproof and moisture proof, not to mention we coated all components with a thin waterproof protectant.

Funny you ask? Did you know that many of the compasses contained in Thermal Imagining Cameras are very inaccurate? We did! That is why we conducted extensive research to find the best technology available. We tested the Northern Star in hospitals, high rises, elevator shafts, sub-basements, and metal big box stores. We were astonished with its accuracy. We tested dozens of magnetometers to find the one that filters out man-made interference.

But, just to be sure, we built in technology that informs the user if the Northern Star interpreters outside interference. That’s right…the Northern Star will let you know if it picks up on outside interference so you know that it’s cardinal direction heading may be altered; allowing you to make the best decision possible for you and your crew members. That is technology at its best; all packed in a housing the size of a quarter.

The Northern Star is activated by the firefighter sharply tapping his/her mask and showing the unit “firefighter-like” movement. A sharp tap and shake will do it. We designed the Northern Star so the firefighter can activate the unit while on air. This was done in an attempt to conserve battery life. The Northern Star will turn itself off when the mask comes to rest for three minutes.

We are working hard to maximize the battery life. We have chosen to utilize a rechargeable lithium battery to power the Northern Star. Two batteries will be included with each purchase. This allows the firefighter to return to station when the job is done and swap his/her low battery for a fully charged battery and be back in service immediately. Firefighters can expect to get 6-8 hours of run time off of one battery depending on temperature and other mitigating factors.

The Northern Star is equipped with a low battery function notifying the user when the battery falls below a designated threshold. All four lights will briefly flash simultaneously every five seconds to notify the user the battery needs to be immediately swapped.

Installation is simple. Pop the top housing off and insert the battery as indicated in the directions. Decide where you want to mount the Northern Star within your mask. After you’ve identified the best location within your mask, peal the protective backing and press the Northern Star onto the lens. We are utilizing a 3M product similar to their Command Strips. It is as simple as peel and stick.
